I had to use numerous spreadsheets and it took me hours of my time to manage my clients campaigns properly. Fast forward a few years until today and PPC advertising has improved in leaps and bounds.

Googles’ latest big step forward comes with the recent announcement of AdWords Automated Rules. This is a impressive new feature which allows you to automate changes to your AdWords account based on criteria that you specify.

You can now have many of the tasks you regularly perform to keep your AdWords account running smoothly, done for you. Think about how much time you could save, especially if you are a small business owner.

 

What Tasks Can You Automate?

To see all the automating options you have, look for the “Automate” button on the Campaign, Keyword, Ad Group and Ad tabs within your account. Here are just a few examples of what you may choose to automate:

  • Daily Budget Changes: There is nothing more frustrating than having AdWords pull your ads when they are converting, because your budget is insufficient to last the entire day. You could setup a rule to tell AdWords to (for instance) increase your daily budget by 10% if your cost-per-conversion is less than $25.
  • Pause Campaigns: You never want to be paying more for a sale in bids than you make in profit. You may therefore want to setup a rule that pauses a campaign if your cost-per-acquisition is more than $10.
  • Enable Campaigns: It could be that you set a rule to pause all your campaigns on a Friday at midnight due to low conversions at the weekend. Then on Monday, you only want to enable those campaigns that are your best performers. You therefore setup a rule that only enables those campaigns which had a conversion rate last week better than 2% .

When using AdWords rules, you are not limited to applying them just to campaigns. You can also apply them to individual ad groups, keywords and ads. For example:

  • Pause Ad Groups: You may want to keep a tight control over how much of your budget certain ad groups are allowed to use. You could set a rule that pauses an ad group if the amount spent in a day exceeds $25.
  • Change Keyword Bids: If a keyword is converting well, you may choose to try and maximise your profits by reducing your bid. Likewise, if a keyword is performing badly, you may want to increase your bid to make that ad more prominent.
  • Enable Ads: Running a special promotion can mean you staying up late to turn your ads on at the right moment. However, now you can set a rule that will turn your ads on automatically for you.

The different uses for AdWords Automated Rules are limited only by your imagination, this makes them extremely powerful. However, you will not get the most benefit from this feature unless your rules are setup right.

Worst still, a badly setup rule may actually damage your accounts performance. You must therefore use them with caution, test everything and regularly monitor how they are performing.

You don’t need to be a coding genius to make good progress with SEO. These days most of the technical stuff happens behind the scenes and we can use a friendly, easy to use content management system to edit websites, put up new content, and even build complex sites from scratch. You can do almost anything without needing to see a single line of HTML.

However, there are some concepts that anyone learning the basics of SEO should become familiar with. They’re not complicated (most HTML isn’t) but they will help you make sure your site is properly optimised.

The first thing to look at is the way headings are marked up. In a page’s HTML code, the headings usually won’t be assigned an individual font, size, color, and alignment. They’ll be tagged as a H1 or H2 heading, and share characteristics with the other headings of that type. It’s worth being aware of which pieces of text are defined as H1 and H2- Google and the other search engines tend to assume H1 headings are important enough to be page titles, and anything marked as a H2 heading will be considered a strong indicator of topic. Placing keywords in H1 and H2 keywords is a must, and it should be done thoughtfully.

Some pieces of HTML don’t affect the way a page looks at all- at least not to you and me. Search engine crawlers reading through the HTML will examine specially defined meta tags. The meta desc tag should contain a brief, single-sentence description of the page content, and relevant target keywords should be noted in the meta keywords tag. Remember that just listing keywords in the meta information isn’t enough- it is sometimes useful and it’s very easy to do, but you need to back the meta tags up by including the keywords in text content too.

The HTML title tag is not quite the same as the meta desc tag. It’s what will show up on top of the browser tab when someone opens the site, and the default label a bookmark will be given. It’ll appear on search engine results pages too, so choose the contents carefully. The title should be informative and selected with target keywords in mind.

There will be certain pages on your own website that it’s better to tell search engine crawlers not to index. Content like terms and conditions rarely contains anything that will help associate your site with a useful keyword or establish relevance to a particular target phrase, and letting crawlers include them only dilutes the content you do want them looking at.

There are several ways to do fence off pages, but the simplest is to use a meta robots tag and specify that you don’t want the content indexed. Note that you only have to do this if don’t want the crawler to use a page- if you do, don’t worry about the meta robots tag. If it’s not there, they’ll index the page.

Links can also be tagged with extra information. The thing you most need to watch out for is called the nofollow tag. Adding one of these tells Google that while you are linking to the target site, you don’t want that link to transfer any authority. When hunting for links, take care that what you’re getting is a dofollow link, not a nofollow. Sometimes it is worth having a nofollow link just for the traffic that might come through it, but it won’t help drive up your search rankings.

How Small Businesses Can Benefit from Google’s Panda Update

As many professionals in the search engine optimization industry are probably aware, Google recently rolled out a wide-sweeping algorithm update that’s been dubbed “Panda.” Panda was designed to punish “content farms”, websites that mass produce content designed to attract search traffic and ad revenue. After the Panda update, many websites that didn’t fit into the content farm category found themselves negatively impacted in search rankings.

Like any change in search engine programs, there will be winners and losers with Panda. If sites like eHow.com and AssociatedContent have lost their cherished positions at the top of the search results page, then other sites have taken their place. For years, small businesses have struggled with the task of generating backlinks, interesting content, and an overall online experience capable of competing with the army of freelancers that work for these larger websites. With the recent update, I’m confident that small businesses can capture some of the higher rankings. Here are a few suggestions as to how to do it.

  1. Use geo-targeted meta tags. Meta tags have been de-emphasized in SEO literature over the past couple of years because there’s been rampant abuse of them. People stuff too many words in them and get themselves in trouble. But now, the game is different. Specifying the latitude and longitude of your business can have a strong impact on your rankings. With the Panda update, Google decided to favor local markets over global ones, since the content farms targeted the global market and the emphasis has been shifting to local search. Search engines are favoring local markets.
  2. Generate an hCard. Along with tip one, this will help establish your website as a local identity. Since small businesses don’t care much about global terms (the donut store in Manteca, CA would want to optimize for “Manteca donuts” not “donuts”), gaining a firm hold on a local term can be easier now that content farms aren’t dominating every search result page.
  3. Put your business address on your website and make sure this is the address listed on your domain’s WHOIS record.
  4. Get listed in Google Places, Bing’s local directory, and Yahoo Local. Easy spots near the top and they establish credibility as a local brand.
  5. Use RDFa. People familiar with the framework are likely to jump in and say that this has nothing to do with Google’s Panda update. But here’s what Google has done: they’ve punished low quality, sleezy content. They’ve shifted the focus to sites you trust, sites you want to interact with socially, and sites with original content. RDFa, short for Resource Description Framework, is a semantic markup for your website. It identifies the different elements of your site in a universal way so that search engines and other programs can organize them better. RDFa is part of the semantic web, which is really an extended effort to get web pages, resources, and applications to play well with others. Correct RDFa tags will tell search engines who created the content, when it was created, and what its elements are. It creates an element of trust, and in an era of rampant content scraping, copyright violations, and websites “you don’t want to give your credit card number to”, RDFa sets you above the competition by giving search engines a way to identify your site as the originator of specific content.
  6. Clean up your site. If you’ve aggregated content from somewhere else, posted drivel, or done anything spammish, clean it up and get back to a solid link building strategy. Write quality articles for other sites that include backlinks to your own, make sure your SEO consultant isn’t doing anything shady, and keep your nose clean. I’m confident that small business owners can be the winners in Google’s Panda update.
