If you manage a blog and you’re looking to make some money on it, one way to do so is through advertising. But how can you attract advertisers?
According to Lars Vraa, founder of Web-based Tripwire Magazine, there are two key components you must have to attract advertisers – quality content and a lot of Web traffic. Another thing that helps is to gear your content toward a particular market – preferably a profitable one. The content will attract the traffic, which in turn will interest advertisers, who are looking for the clicks and the exposure.
Develop a Niche for Your Blog
It is important to find a particular area of interest for your content – a niche – so that your blog will appeal to a group of readers who have a particular interest. By doing this you will presumably know your audience, what their needs are, and how to provide solutions to the problems they have. By doing this you will be more likely to develop a loyalty among your readers, and they will return to your blog frequently to see what is on it. In addition, loyal readers are more apt to support your blog by clicking the ads and buying.
Develop an Ad Placement Strategy
To make your blog more interesting to advertisers, you need to also develop an advertising strategy. You need to think about the kinds of ads you are going to take, what the procedure is for advertisers to buy space on your blog, and what the cost will be. Vraa recommends a page that lays out everything a potential advertiser will need to know if the company chooses to advertise on your blog.
Another thing to think about is where to put the ads on your blog. Much of this is simply trial and error, trying different spots to see what works best. Vraa says he puts his ads at the top and running down the right side. This works for him, and may be a place to start.
Searching for Advertisers
There are many different places you can go to hunt for advertisers, Vraa says. The most obvious is searching on Google. You can simply plug in the keywords that apply to your blog and then note what advertising links and companies pop up.
You also can check out other blogs similar to yours as well as forums and websites with content like your own. You can see the sponsors advertising on other sites, and then you can contact these sponsors. This is especially effective because these advertisers are already looking for sites like yours and are more likely to try out new sites to see how their ads sell.
Another place to look for advertisers is on the social networking sites. Advertisers are using places such as Twitter and Facebook to find the best blogs on which to advertise. You can tweet or post on Facebook about the availability of ads on your blog, as well as putting up a fan page on Facebook and adding the Facebook plugin to your site.
