If you have been keeping an eye on the world of advertising over the past few years, you realize that social media’s impact on the industry has been mind-blowing to say the least. These days, consumers of all ages are spending a lot of time on social media websites which means that advertisers have to do the same, – that is, if they expect to truly succeed.

Consumers today are more demanding than ever. They want to make direct contact with companies who advertise their brands and are more willing to do business with those who attempt to stay in touch with their customer base. Very much like how individuals display various aspects of their lives on their Facebook profiles, companies are now routinely using Facebook and other social media platforms to advertise information about what they sell.

Those companies who are making use of social media are becoming engaged with consumers by asking and answering questions, posting videos and running contests. Their main goal is to broaden their reach and to gain more customers by becoming involved with people. The most successful companies making use of this new form of advertising are hiring full-time PR personnel who are responsible for their social networking efforts.

A great way for start-ups to spread the word about their businesses quickly is to become active on sites such as Twitter, YouTube and Facebook. When these social networks are used, advertising looks a lot less like advertising and more about engaging with people to provide them with brand messages they are interested in. It’s all about being relevant and spreading the news through interesting posts.

A few years ago, Facebook was looked at by many people as simply a place for young people to connect with others by sharing photos and stories. Today however, that has changed dramatically as there are now hundreds of millions of people the world over using Facebook to connect with friends and businesses alike. The quick growing evolution of Facebook clearly demonstrates that social networking’s impact runs wide and deep.

Today, more than half of all internet users are spending over than six hours each week on social media. The most successful advertisers out there know this and are therefore taking their messages to those social media platforms where consumers congregate. The advertising trend today consists of taking a friendly and informative approach to build relationships and trust and to directly communicate with consumers. The rules of advertising have not changed too much but how messages are delivered has.

Information on social media platforms can spread like wildfire. This means that it is of the utmost importance that companies share compelling, positive, upbeat info about their products and services on social media so that those receiving the information will want to share it further. An innovative, fresh new product or service can go viral in a very short period of time if social media advertising is done correctly. Evian’s “Roller Babies” smashed YouTube records in 2009, racking up well over 45 million views worldwide. The “Roller Babies” video today has been seen by over 58.5 million people and that number will undoubtedly continue to grow.

Social media is powerful, effective and when used correctly can help a company succeed beyond its wildest expectations. It does not matter if your company is small, medium sized or large, tapping into social media can give your brand a much needed shot in the arm to propel it onto the road of success.
