Guest blogging is a great way to build a reputation with new customers and visitors. When we look at a blog that we want to submit a guest post to we often look at two things:

  1. How much traffic the blog has
  2. The page rank of the blog

The latter of the two has become such an obsession with some writers that they won’t even consider writing a guest post for blogs that don’t have a certain page rank (PR) no matter what.

What is Page Rank?

Early on, Google’s Larry Page set a scale of 1 to 10 to determine the value of a web page’s authority for a keyword. This rank would play a considerable role in how well the page would rank in the Search Engine Result’s Page (SERP). So the higher the page rank, the more Google viewed that page as an authority.

And the best way to improve your page rank? Collect backlinks from other sites that have high page ranks.

Google’s theory was that if an important site linked to your site then the content you have must be important for that keyword as well.

As of 2009 Google began to devalue the page rank factor in judging a site’s authority on a topic. This is evident by their decision to remove page rank values from their Webmaster Tools.

Is page rank still important? Yes, Google still relies on page rank but there are many other things that they use to help determine how well a site will rank in the results.

MozRank

MozRank is a “link popularity metric that shows how popular a webpage is on the web.” Basically, the more incoming links a webpage has, the higher the MozRank for that page will be. Like page rank, MozRank is measured on a scale of 1 to 10 with a 3 being the average.

So a higher MozRank must mean that your site will have a better placement in the SERPs right? Not exactly.

Technically, MozRank has no effect on Google’s algorithm. Google doesn’t check MozRank at all (at least we are told) when ranking sites for a keyword.

So why should you care?

Because the folks over at SEOMoz are pretty smart when it comes to measuring what has an effect on your website’s SEO. Through testing, testing and more testing they learn what makes one page appear more important than another to Google, Yahoo! and Bing.

How MozRank is Different

So if both measure links then what is the difference?

The most significant difference between the two is how a site can improve their rank. As I said, Google’s page rank requires backlinks from high PR sites to improve their own page rank.

With the MozRank your popularity can come from a page’s ability to capture a lot of links from popular pages, or a few links from really popular pages. Kind of like high school.

MozRank also improves much more quickly than page rank does. When it comes to PR, most sites are stuck at 0 for what seems like an eternity. MozRank averages at a 3, and it can move up to a 4 or 5 with some work.

Moving up past that, well that will take a lot more work.
