In recent months, I have heard much talk among bloggers and website managers about the benefits of incorporating video onto their sites. Video posts are certainly nothing new, to be sure, but the growing popularity of embedded video advertising has made websites eager to capitalize on this marketing trend. Selling advertising space within a video – in either media or text form – is much more lucrative than renting out space along the sides of a webpage. But to sell that video space you need to have videos on your site, a dilemma that has encouraged many bloggers to put down their virtual pens and pick up a camera.

While adding video posts to your site can certainly benefit your digital marketing strategies, I am also surprised how few people discuss the other benefit of video: SEO. With video posts, you can quickly and easily boost your site’s page rank and bring in more traffic, so long as you do it correctly.

Here’s why:

Search Engines Like Video

In an effort to diversify their offerings and return results that most closely align with user preferences, search engines such as Google and Bing have increasingly favored video content in the past year. In fact, a study has shown that a given video post is 50 times more likely to make the first page of a Google result than a piece of text with similar keywords and context.

Video Drives Traffic

On some blogs and websites, depending on the subject matter and the readership demographic, video may be an unwelcome medium relative to written text. But for most people, video posts add a diversified and engaging element that, when done right, can make a site more appealing. Viewers are also more likely to stay longer on a site when video is involved. It takes longer to watch even a small part of video than to skim a piece of text, after all, and you can make a dedicated video library that encourages more user click-trough’s and a lower bounce rate.

Video Creates More Keyword Opportunities

If you write a blog about solar power, for example, you may find yourself struggling to constantly drop the phrase “solar power” – along with any related terms – into the written content that you produce. With video, however, it is quite easy to add tags below each video that highlight the contained content and stand out more for purposes of SEO.

These are the main reasons why video posts can easily and quickly help your SEO objectives. While video is certainly not appropriate for every site or subject matter, those who can find ways to incorporate it stand to benefit noticeably as a result.
